What you need to have before moving

Utilities

Before leaving your present location, be sure to take care of your utilities! End service, order the final meter readings, and have the transfer date ready when you call the following services:

  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • WiFi
  • Water
  • Sewer
  • Trash Removal
  • Telephone
  • Cable

Contact the utility companies in the city to which you are moving to inquire about installation & fees for installation services (also have the dates/times you wish to begin service available).

Change of Address notification

Request a change of address cards from your post office. Send a card to each of the following that may apply:

  • Insurance Companies
  • Amazon Default Delivery
  • Credit Card Companies
  • W2/Tax Information within the Company
  • Other companies for which you are billed or have accounts with
  • Magazines
  • Friends/Family
  • Place of worship or other groups

You can also use the United States Postal Service website to change your official mailing address. Click here for the USPS change of address form.

Before You Move...

  • Leave your new address with your real estate company.
  • Leave all keys to your property with your real estate agent, landlord, or neighbor.
  • If leaving your home vacant, clean out all trash and secure windows, doors, etc. Consider winterizing the home, if necessary. (Inform your real estate agent of any needs or concerns they should be aware of while the house remains vacant.)
  • Check the status of your utilities:
    • Gas
    • Electricity
    • Water
    • Sewer
    • Trash Removal
    • Telephone
    • Cable
  • Have the refrigerator, automatic washer, and other appliances checked by a certified technician. Have the stove serviced and check the pilot light.
  • Check the pilot lights on the hot water heater, incinerator, and furnace.
  • Have your new address changed on your driver’s license and other forms of identification.
  • Note any problems or questions that you were unaware of about your new home. Contact your real estate agent if necessary.
  • Ask the mail carrier if any mail is being held for you and notify the post office of your arrival.
  • Register your automobiles within the time allowed (if you have moved to a different state.)
